LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS TO SUPPORT CHILDREN WITH MATH

Dear St. Luke CES parents:

We have organized a two-part plan to build the capacity of our parents to support their children with math learning at home.

Part 1: PARENT MATH NIGHT

On Thursday, May 2nd, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., St. Luke CES parents are invited to an interactive workshop, where you will learn some current thinking about math teaching and learning as well as assessment and evaluation. There will be hands-on activities for parents that will model how math tools and real-life problems are key to engaging children in math thinking and learning. Math resources and websites will be on display. WCDSB numeracy consultants and staff from our school have planned an exciting and worthwhile learning experience for our parents. This evening is not intended for students.

PLEASE RSVP TO MRS. LISHMAN AT nancy.lishman@wcdsb.ca BY THURSDAY, APRIL 18TH TO CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE. We would like to have accurate numbers for our awesome door prizes! (Expenses for this Parent Math Night are covered by our Parents Reaching Out grant from the Ministry of Education.)

Part 2: CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK – MATH LESSON OPEN HOUSE

On Monday, May 6th, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., we will be opening our doors for parents to observe their students during a typical math lesson. Parents will see their children collaborating with peers to solve challenging and meaningful math problems, using math tools to support their thinking, sharing a variety of strategies and explaining their thinking. Our hope is that it will be easier to support math learning at home if parents can see what happens in math class at school. We hope you can join us!
