March UPDATES

“DO YOU WANT TO FAST THIS LENT?” Pope Francis tells us How:

Fast from hurting words and say kind words

Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.

Fast from anger and be filled with patience.

Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.

Fast from worry and have trust in God.

Fast from complaints; contemplate simplicity.

Fast from pressures and be prayerful.

Fast from bitterness; fill your hearts with joy.

Fast from selfishness and be Compassionate.

Fast from grudges and be reconciled.

Fast from words; be silent and listen.

Welcome to a new month. This week marks the beginning of the most important time in our liturgical calendar as we prepare to begin Lent. As we begin this journey together it’s important to reflect on how we will fulfill our promise of prayer, fasting and alms giving. We spent last week celebrating Pink Shirt Day and the call to kindness that each of us must heed. My hope is that we can spend the next 40 days perfecting Pope Francis’ words and fast from things that make life difficult and instead concentrate on loving our neighbour, loving ourselves, and loving our God.

Lots of important reminders and information as we get through the next 2 weeks before a much-needed March break.

Prayers for Ukraine

God of infinite mercy and goodness, we pray to you today for Peace. You offer us your peace continually (Jn.14:27) and constantly remind us that peacemakers are blessed, “for they shall be called children of God” (Mt.5:9). May your voice resound in the hearts of all, as you call us to follow the path of reconciliation and peace, and to be merciful as you are merciful.

We pray to you for the people of Ukraine who are experiencing conflicts and deaths. Bless the leaders with wisdom, vision, and perseverance needed to build together a world of justice and solidarity, and to break down walls of hostility and division.

To you, we entrust all families and pray that they may never yield to discouragement and despair, but become heralds of new hope to one another in this challenging time.

May you continue to inspire all of us to the oneness of heart and mind, to work generously for the common good, to respect the dignity of every person and the fundamental rights which have their origin in the image and likeness of God impressed upon every human being.

Grant eternal rest to the dead and quick recovery to the wounded, we pray through Christ our Lord, Amen!

Thank you …

  • To the staff and students for their dedication and learning throughout Black History Month. The passion, excitement and understanding this month, as we explored influential Black Canadians and their impact on our history, has been amazing. I look forward to seeing this passion continue throughout the year as we come to understand the rich, diverse and sometimes difficult past Canada has had and the steps we need to take to make it an equitable and barrier free country for everyone.
  • For your support to keep our community healthy. Please continue to screen your child(ren) for any symptoms of any illness each day before they come to school.  Please ensure that you are following the screener information all the way to the bottom as it will let you know if you/your child may need to isolate as well as anyone else in the household – including directions for siblings attending school: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/
  • To our community for supporting PINK Shirt Day, a day dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion and respect, demonstrating what we do every day at school!
  • To our families for sending your children prepared to play outside in the winter weather each day! Please ensure that your child has outdoor and indoor footwear and snow pants! Thank you for your support with this!
  • To our Catholic School Advisory Council who helped subsize our Pancake Day and also delivered over 400 pancakes to the students of St. Luke!

  • To our students and staff for their participation in promoting school spirit: 100th Day of School, Wear Pink for Anti-Bullying, and Dress Red, White and/or Pink for Valentine’s Day.  Our school-wide Valentine’s VIRTUAL BINGO was a huge hit!

Good afternoon Lightning!

There are a lot of updates coming your way…please read carefully!

Family Day!

Monday, February 21, 2022 is Family Day!  We encourage all of you to celebrate your family and we look forward to seeing all of you back on Tuesday, February 22, 2022!

Report Cards!

Thursday, February 17, 2022 is Term 1 Report Card Day.  Your child will be receiving their report card!  We hope that you are able to have a discussion about the many strengths that we have seen and we hope that you will be able to articulate some goals for growth.  We look forward to seeing all of your “page 4’s” back on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

Temporary Remote Learning:

The option for students to connect to their classes Temporary Remote Learning is coming to an end on Friday, February 18th, 2022.  The option was provided at the request of the board and Ministry of Education while we navigated the high point of the Omicron surge.  We are now a month out from the peak and while the risk of covid is not fully removed, it is far similar to where we were in the fall months.  We look forward to seeing all of our friends back in-person on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

Daily COVID Screening:

Daily Screening and confirmation by the school remains a provincial requirement.  In our elementary schools we will stop using the paper confirmation form, however students will still be asked to confirm that they have completed the screening with you at home.  It is extremely important that no student comes to school not having completed their screening at home.  Please continue to use the following link and complete the screening each day before coming to school: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/

Bus Driver Shortages:

School bus operators in the Region continue to experience bus driver shortages.  Buses will be cancelled when either a bus route cannot be serviced up to 40 minutes past its scheduled time, or when there is no driver available to service the route. Please see communication in relation to Transportation: Driver Shortage FEB1622. Families should subscribe to automatic notifications on STSWR’s website to be notified of late buses and cancellations: https://www.stswr.ca/parents/subscription-service-instructions/

If you have any questions or concerns about these updates, please do not hesitate to contact the main office.

Have a wonderful day Lightning families!  Happy Family Day!
