St. Luke CES Update – Feb. 12, 2021

Dear St. Luke families:

We have had a great first week back since the school closure. It has been an absolute joy to see the students back in our building, getting back into routines! Please see below for some updates.

MARCH BREAK POSTPONED

Yesterday, it was announced that March Break will not occur during the week of March 15th. Instead, there will be a spring break during the week of April 12th.

FIRST WEEK OF LENT

Unfortunately, we will not be able to celebrate Shrove Tuesday this year the way we usually do by offering pancakes for students. We hope to bring back this tradition in 2022! Please feel free to celebrate at home with pancakes or pack pancakes for a snack or lunch.

We will not be able to distribute ashes on Ash Wednesday this year, either. Teachers will be focusing on this special day in their classrooms. Here is a liturgy that families may wish to use at home: Diocese of Hamilton | Ash Wednesday at Home (hamiltondiocese.com).

TERM 1 REPORT CARDS

Term 1 Report Cards will be sent home with students on Friday, February 19th. We are so proud of our students’ achievements – especially this year with all of the strict protocols and unexpected changes that have been thrown at them! Way to go, Lightning! Please return the parent/student response forms along with the Report Card envelopes during the week of February 22nd.

JK REGISTRATION

Last call for JK registrations! We would like to have all new registrations wrapped up by the end of February. If you have a child who has turned or is turning 4 in 2021, please call the school so we can assist you with the registration process.

REMINDER: FREE ST.  LUKE T-SHIRT – SELECT SIZE BY FEBRUARY 15TH

Please remember to go on School Cash Online and select the t-shirt size for each of your children by Monday, February 15th. We can’t wait to give our students this special surprise and to have everyone wearing their new spirit wear every Wednesday!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY AND HAPPY FAMILY DAY WEEKEND!

We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family!

Final WCDSB Elementary School Transition Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians of WCDSB Elementary School Children:

Please note that your final opportunity to state your preference for a transfer for your child’s elementary school learning mode begins at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, and ends at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

A special online survey has been created for you to state your choice. The survey is not yet active. It will be activated at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16th.

The form will be available on our main webpage in the spotlight section – www.wcdsb.ca

You only need to complete the survey if you are looking for a transfer.

Please ensure you complete the survey during the stated February 16th to 18th time fame, as there will be no requests for changes granted after the survey closes. Additionally, as this is the final transition point for the 2020-21 school year, there will be no requests to change learning mode granted through to the end of June.

Again — the survey closes at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021.

Thank you for taking the time to state your choice and for assisting us in having the staffing, resources, and programming in place to assist the ongoing learning and success of your children.

St. Luke CES Update – Feb. 5, 2021

Dear St. Luke families:

Hopefully, you have had a chance to read the letter from our Director of Education which was sent out yesterday. It is attached here again for your reference:

School Building Re-Opening Update to WCDSB Parents Feb 04 21

In addition to the information shared yesterday by Loretta Notten, please see below for some important school updates:

PLANNING FOR RETURN TO SCHOOL – MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH

We are so excited to have all our students and staff back in the building on Monday! There are some important changes we are making to enhance our health and safety protocols. Please discuss this information with your child before Monday. Our teachers will also review all health and safety protocols with their students on Monday.

  • Students will not be permitted to play with any equipment (i.e., no balls) on the yard starting on Monday. We will consider reintroducing equipment at a later date. Luckily, we have some fresh snow for them to play with for now!
  • Students will now be expected to wear masks at all times in the school, including in the gym. The only time students will be unmasked in the school is when they are eating or drinking. Students should not be talking while they are unmasked.
  • Students will now be expected to wear masks when they are outside for recesses, as the recommended physical distancing of 2 meters cannot be ensured.
  • Students will need 2 masks every day – one for inside and one for outside. Please ensure masks are washed regularly.
  • As soon as students arrive on school property in the morning, they need to be masked.
  • After school, students should leave school property right away so there is no congregating.
  • Similarly, parents who are coming on school property before or after school are asked to not congregate with other parents. Parents are also expected to be masked on school property.
  • There are no changes to bussing schedules or expectations. Students are reminded to continue to wear masks while at the bus stop and on the bus.
  • COVID-19 screening for students must happen every morning before coming to school. The link is on our school and Board websites and is included here as well: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/.
  • Air purifying fan units have been installed in every classroom.

As always, thank you so much, parents, for your partnership and ongoing support. We could not get through this challenging time without you!

VIDEO CREATED BY OUR ‘GREAT 8s’

Please share this video with your child. Both Grade 8 classes contributed beautiful artwork and Shalagh G. created the touching video. It is wonderful to see their leadership continue to shine – even while at home! We hope you and your child enjoy it! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DKSjQcfxyoKoVeFM9TvkDLbND3YFAGCJ/view?usp=sharing

WINTER WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Winter Walk to School Day is on Wednesday, February 10th! We hope to see lots of students walking to school on Wednesday. Our students who are at St. Isidore can participate in an at-home walk. Please see the poster for more details:

VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day will be here soon! We know this is a very special day for our students. Due to our current situation, we will ask once again that nothing be brought into school from students’ homes. We will not be able to distribute cards, candies, etc. Teachers will be offering fun activities leading up to Valentine’s Day. On Friday, February 12th, we invite all students and staff to wear red, white or pink!

SHHHHH! PLEASE HELP US KEEP THIS SURPRISE FOR OUR STUDENTS!

With Valentine’s Day coming up and with gratitude in our hearts for the incredible grit our students have demonstrated throughout this pandemic, we want to show our students how much we love and appreciate them! Our school is purchasing a t-shirt for every student, including our students who are currently learning at St. Isidore. The t-shirt will be white with our new ‘sport’ logo (see below). Parents, please check School Cash Online later today. There will be a sizing guide. All you need to do is select a size for your child(ren). Orders must be placed between February 5th and 15th. Please try to keep this as a surprise for our students (as you discreetly measure their chest! 😊).

STAFFING CHANGE

Mrs. Ziegler, one of our wonderful Lunch Hour Supervisors, is transferring to another school in our Board. We thank Mrs. Ziegler for her many years of dedication to our students. We welcome Mrs. He, who will replace Mrs. Ziegler effective Monday, February 8th.
