WCDSB Schools Closed on Tuesday, February 4, 2020

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) has announced that all of its members will be engaging in a one-day strike on Tuesday, February 4. This decision affects all Catholic district school boards in Ontario.

As a result of this strike, all Waterloo Catholic District School Board elementary and secondary schools will be closed on February 4.

All WCDSB extended day programs will be open for the day as usual (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for students currently registered in the program.

Secondary school credit courses, hair styling courses and culinary arts courses offered at the WCDSB’s St. Louis Adult Learning & Continuing Education Centres campuses will be cancelled on February 4. St. Louis guidance and correspondence services will also be unavailable on February 4. All other St. Louis programs will be open and running on their normal schedules.

Community use of schools activities will continue as scheduled.

OECTA’s previously announced administrative job actions will remain in effect before and after February 4.

As before, we remain hopeful the two sides will return to the bargaining table quickly and will come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.

REVISED: Fundraiser Information with Correct Video Link

Dear St. Luke Families:

There is a lot of excitement in the air for this year’s school fundraiser!

Hopefully, you have received your letter and pledge form that went home on Friday, January 10th. Generous prize donations are already coming in and so are School Cash Online pledges. Monetary donations (School Cash Online, cash or cheque) and prize donations will be gratefully accepted until Monday, January 20th.

Funds raised will go toward the purchase of classroom resources, library resources and physical activity resources. Students are really hoping we will earn enough money to purchase a gaga ball pit for our school yard! Check out the video so you can see how this awesome game is played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzYv1583BxU.

Students are also working to earn several incentives:

AMOUNT                 PRIZE

$3,000                     Extra Recess

$5,000                     Gum Day

$6,000                     Games Day/Listen to Music for half a day – Bring games (board games or cards and/or music to play – no cell phones or gaming systems)

$8,000                     No Homework the weekend of February 1st and 2nd

$10,000                   School Wide Surprise Treat

Each student to collect over $100 will have their name entered into a draw for a $100 gift card for Conestoga Mall.

DIVISION GRAND PRIZES:

The student in each division that brings in the largest donation wins a $25.00 gift certificate for Conestoga Mall (JK/SK/Primary, Junior, Intermediate).

Class in each division with the highest money raised per student will earn a class reward.

  2. Top selling Junior class
  3. Top selling Intermediate class

We are looking forward to celebrating our fundraiser success during our dance-a-thon on Thursday, January 23rd! There are lots of fun activities planned and there is a beach theme for our event day this year, so get your Hawaiian shirts ready, Lightning!

Potential Withdrawal of Services by OECTA on Monday

As part of the ongoing central bargaining process involving the Ontario government and education workers across the province, the association representing our teachers – the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) – has indicated that if a collective agreement isn’t reached today or over the weekend, that starting Monday, January 13, 2020 teachers will no longer be performing a variety of administrative duties.

A list of specific duties being withdrawn can be found at:

http://www.catholicteachers.ca/OECTA/media/pdfs/News/2020/jan/NR_2019-018.pdf

This withdrawal of services will not impact the safety of our school and, with the exception of preparation for EQAO testing, direct services provided to our students will be unaffected.

Co-curricular activities (clubs, field trips, special events, etc.) will not be impacted by this withdrawal of services at this time.

We do remain hopeful the two sides can come to a fair and respectful agreement that serves the best interests of our students.
