St. Luke CES Update – Dec. 18, 2020

Dear St. Luke families:

We are ready to share our super-duper, top secret Christmas surprise! Thanks to the creative ideas of our teachers and the artistic genius of our students, we have created a spectacular OUTDOOR CHRISTMAS ART GALLERY for your enjoyment! At some point over the Christmas holidays, we hope your family can come to St. Luke CES, walk around the school, and enjoy our students’ stunning works of art that you will see on all the windows. Please come during the day so you can clearly see the art, and consider bringing hot chocolate and portable Christmas music to enhance your experience! We hope you like this surprise we planned for you. It is our little way of thanking you for being so incredibly supportive of us during this challenging time.

The St. Luke staff would like to wish all our students and families a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, safe, and restful holiday!

Thank you for your generosity, Lightning!

Thank you for participating in our Christmas charitable activity by donating to St. Agnes Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Together, we raised $1965.00! Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.

Families from our own community can connect with St. Vincent de Paul to receive gift cards for food, clothing or even gifts for their own children. Families seeking assistance can call 519-504-8399.

New Ontario “Support for Learners” Financial Assistance Program

On November 30, the Ontario government launched the Support for Learners program.

Through this program, the government is providing financial support to help parents and guardians with additional costs during the 2020-2021 school year, during the second wave of COVID-19.

Eligible parents or guardians will receive a one-time payment of:

  • $200 for each child up to age 12
  • $250 for each child or youth up to age 21 years with special needs

This is a new program, and all parents or guardians who are residents of Ontario with eligible children will need to submit a new application for each child.

As of today, eligible parents or guardians can go to Ontario.ca/SupportforLearners for more information and to apply for the one-time financial support. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2021.

Support for Learners funding is intended to directly support parents to provide children and youth with key educational resources like workbooks, school supplies, technology and developmental resources during these unprecedented times.

Weather Impacted Learning Day, All Buses Cancelled, All Schools Closed

December 1st, 2020

  • Due to the current weather conditions ALL SCHOOL BUSES, TAXIS AND SPECIAL EDUCATION ROUTES operated by the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and Waterloo Region District School Board are cancelled.
  • All WCDSB and WRDSB schools and sites are CLOSED and it will be a Remote Learning Day.
  • Students should visit their respective virtual classrooms or WCDSB and WRDSB Learning @ Home for resources.
  • All Extended Day Childcare Programs are CLOSED.
  • All programs and services offered by St. Louis Continuing Education and Adult and Learning Centre are cancelled.

Students will be provided with asynchronous student work by 10 am, as each classroom teacher has a Google Classroom or D2L site. Normal bell times will be followed to allow students to contact their teacher through the LMS or email.

School Closed on Inclement Weather Days When Buses are Cancelled

The below message if for all parents/guardians of St. Luke CES to inform you of the Inclement Weather Protocol for School Year 2020-2021.

Excerpt from “Special Message from the Director of Education”:
“As you know – there are sometimes days in the winter when we have to cancel bussing due to the weather and unsafe driving conditions for our buses.  In the past, if roads were still passable, we would leave schools open.  On those days however, we often pooled classes based on the number of staff who fully attended and the number of students.  This year that is not possible due to our COVID cohort- related restrictions.  In consultation with the public board, with whom we share bussing, when we cancel buses, we will close schools and have a remote learning day.  We have communicated in our Wednesday announcements our expectations.  The approach will allow all students to access some learning and we will be continuing to keep one and all safe.  We realize it may not be a perfect solution and learning day, but bus snow days rarely were.”

Celebrating Advent at St. Luke CES

Dear St. Luke families:

This coming Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent and we only have three weeks left until Christmas holidays! Although preparing for Christmas will look a little different this year, we are still very excited about this special time of the year. Here are a few ways that we will be celebrating Advent at school:

THREE WEEKLY ADVENT CELEBRATIONS

On November 30th, December 7th, and December 14th after morning announcements, we will have whole-school virtual Advent liturgies.

CHARITABLE ACTIVITY

Now that we are in the ‘Red-Control’ classification in our region, we are hesitant to ask families to go out and shop in order to donate to a hat/mitten drive, angel tree, etc. We have been in touch with the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Agnes Church and they are really excited about a monetary donation from our school community. Donations will be gratefully accepted through School Cash Online from Monday, November 30th until Friday, December 11th.

Families from our own community can connect with St. Vincent de Paul to receive gift cards for food, clothing or even gifts for their own children. Families seeking assistance can call 519-504-8399.

SPIRIT SQUAD THEME DAYS

Here are the spirit days for December:

Monday, December 14 – Wear your favourite Christmas hat (Santa Hat, Reindeer Antlers, Elf Hat, etc.)

Wednesday, December 16 – Wear a warm Christmas sweater (or a red, white, or green top)

Friday, December 18 – Wear your coziest winter jammies

CHRISTMAS SURPRISE

We are planning one more super-duper, top secret Christmas surprise for our St. Luke families! Stay tuned!
