Halloween at St. Luke CES

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Students at St. Luke CES will have a choice between wearing orange and black or wearing a Halloween costume on October 31st.

JK to Grade 3 students will be having their own special activity in the morning before the first recess. Students who choose to wear costumes will then put them away so they do not get damaged at recess or snack time.

In order to ensure that all of our students have a fun and safe day, there are a few guidelines that we would like all students to follow with respect to costumes:

  • Costumes should not interfere with classroom activities. Students must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see and hear.
  • No fake weapons of any kind are allowed.
  • Masks that cover the face are not permitted.
  • Recognizing that we have very young children at our school, costumes should not be scary or gory.
  • As always, all students are asked to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the Christian values of St. Luke CES and the WCDSB.
  • Appropriate and safe footwear must be worn.
  • Students will not be given time during the school day to prepare their costumes, i.e., getting dressed in the washrooms, applying makeup, etc.
  • Staff will not be able to assist students with their costumes. Costumes should be simple enough for the students to manage independently.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a fun Halloween day!

Eco Fundraising with Colibri Canada

This past year, St. Luke School worked hard to obtain Gold EcoSchool status for the first time! We would like to continue this momentum and keep up our reducing, reusing and recycling efforts at school. One way that students reduce waste at school is by bringing food in reusable containers each day. We will be working in partnership with Colibri Canada to offer some convenient, reusable snack bags and other eco friendly items for purchase in the upcoming weeks.
Sales will begin October 22, 2019 and end on November 4th, 2019. Flyers will be sent home with students this week. Orders can be made online at www.colibricanada.com and items will be shipped for free to school and distributed to students at the end of the fundraiser. Funds raised will be used for Eco-initiatives (e.g., supplementing the cost of nature based field trips and speakers to visit the school, recycling and greening supplies, etc).

Phone System

We are experiencing technical difficulties within St. Luke CES.  We are working on resolving in the issue.  Our phones are currently being rebooted, so we are unable to accept or send out calls at this time.  We have been informed this issue should be resolved within 10-15 minutes.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Food Treats for Celebrations

Dear parents:

Please be reminded that we are not able to accept homemade or store-bought treats to celebrate children’s birthdays or other occasions. Our staff are obligated to adhere to WCDSB policies such as our Elementary School Food Nutrition, Medical Conditions and Anaphylaxis policies.

If you would like to send something with your child to celebrate special occasions, such as Halloween or Valentine’s Day, please consider sending non-food treats, such as pencils, erasers, cards, etc.

If there are exceptions to these expectations, e.g., a special class event or a whole-school event such as Shrove Tuesday, you will receive communication from the school.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Permission for St. Agnes Church on Friday, October 18th, 2019 – Cash Online

On Friday, October 18th, 2019, all St. Luke CES students and staff will be travelling by bus to St. Agnes Church for our Opening Mass and Celebration of the Feast Day of St. Luke. The cost of transportation has been generously covered by the church, as a way of celebrating their 50th anniversary! If you have not already done so, please visit Cash Online to give permission for your child to attend https://wcdsb.schoolcashonline.com/. If you are not set up on Cash Online yet, please review the attached document to set your family up on this portal for payment & permission for school activities: SCO Registration Instructions
Parents and friends who wish to join us for mass are most welcome, and we ask that you meet us at church. Mass is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Busses will be picking us up at school by 9:00 a.m. and we will return to school by 11:00 a.m. If your child is late for school that morning, please do not drop your child off at school while we are at mass as there will be no supervision for your child. If you do not wish for your child to join us for mass, please call the school to inform Mrs. MacKay that your child will be absent from school that morning. We are looking forward to this very special celebration with Father Aleks!

St. Luke CES Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences

A Communication of Learning – Initial Observations for JK/K students and Progress Reports for students in Grades 1 to 8 will be distributed on Tuesday, November 5th. Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences will be held at St. Luke CES from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 7th. Once again this year, we are using an online booking system for the conferences. The system will open on Monday, October 21st at 9 a.m. and close on Friday, November 1st at 3 p.m. Please see the attachment for instructions. It is not possible to book consecutive interviews. The reason for this is to allow for travel time between classrooms for families with more than one child. Each student is allowed one interview booked online – with their classroom teacher. Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Szczepanowski and Mme Renaud-Blonde will be available on Thursday, November 7th from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. for drop-in interviews. Mr. Gruber will be available for drop-in interviews on Wednesday, November 6th from 2:20 to 7:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing all families of our JK to Grade 8 students on Thursday, November 7th!
