PINK Shirt Day TOMORROW!

Tomorrow is PINK Shirt Day!

Tomorrow…Wednesday, Feb. 28th is PINK shirt day!

We invite all our Lightning students and staff to wear pink tomorrow.  Students across WCDSB are encouraged to wear pink to promote kindness and inclusion and to make a stand against bullying.  This tradition began in Nova Scotia in 2007.  A student was teased for wearing a pink polo shirt to school and the next day, students arrived at the school all wearing  pink to show solidarity and offer support to him.  This message has spread across the world.  Let’s spread a little extra kindness tomorrow everyone!

Important Change in PA Day Schedule and Solar Eclipse Safety

Change in PA Day Schedule & Solar Eclipse Safety Tips

Dear WCDSB Families,
Please be advised that the Professional Activity (PA) Day originally scheduled for April 19, 2024, will now be held on April 8, 2024. This change is being made to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff during the Total Solar Eclipse expected on April 8, 2024.
Looking directly at the Sun causes serious eye damage, especially during a solar eclipse.
To watch a solar eclipse safely, you need eye protection that has been designed for watching a solar eclipse (i.e., meets the ISO 12312-2 standard). Sunglasses are not sufficient to protect your eyes. In addition, viewing any part of a solar eclipse through a smartphone camera, a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will cause serious eye damage.
Total Solar Eclipse Safety Tips
A total solar eclipse is a rare and exciting natural phenomenon. However, it is crucial to view it safely to prevent any damage to the eyes. Here are some tips for safely experiencing the solar eclipse:
  1. Use Proper Eclipse Glasses: Regular sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for viewing the sun. Special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or handheld solar viewers, must be used. Ensure they meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
  2. Adult Supervision for Children: Ensure that children are supervised when using solar filters or eclipse glasses. Teach them the importance of not removing the glasses while looking at the sun.
  3. Alternative Methods: For those who do not have eclipse glasses, using a pinhole projector is a safe way to view a projection of the eclipse. This can be a fun and educational activity to do with children.
  4. Avoid Unsafe Methods: Do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays can damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.
  5. Check the Weather: If it is cloudy, you may not be able to see the eclipse. Use online resources to watch it live if the weather does not permit outdoor viewing.
  6. View it Safely via Livestream: The eclipse can be viewed via livestream broadcast through the NASA Exploratorium.
We hope these tips are helpful for you and your family to safely experience this spectacular event.
Your child’s safety is our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adapting to these changes in our school schedule. Let us all experience this cosmic event safely and responsibly. For more safety tips and information, please visit https://opto.ca/eye-health-library/solar-eclipse-safety

Pancake Tuesday DON’T FORGET!

Today is Shrove Tuesday and we will be serving pancakes to the students of St. LUKE.  Please remember to pack a plate and cutlery in a ziplock bag.  Our parents are already here flipping pancakes.  Can’t wait for the day to begin.

Pancake Tuesday – Important for Tomorrow

A few details about our upcoming Pancake Breakfast on Tuesday, February 13th…
Students may want to consider having a light breakfast, as pancake delivery will begin shortly after the morning bell.
As we are a Certified ECO school, we have asked students to bring their own plastic container and utensils. (ideally one that snaps closed to contain mess when traveling back home).  There will be a very limited number of paper plates and utensils available.
For those students who require a gluten free option, we will have gluten free waffles available (President’s Choice Homestyle Gluten Free Waffles).
If there are any other dietary restrictions, please send in a pancake or waffle alternative for your child in a plastic container.  Clearly mark it with your child’s name and teacher’s name, so we can ensure they can enjoy it at the same time as their classmates.
A big thank you to the volunteers who make this event possible, and to the Restoule Family and Cambridge Food Basics for generously donating the pancake mix and maple syrup.

Pancake Tuesday February 13!

Pancake Tuesday

Tuesday, February 13, 2024

St Luke Catholic School Advisory Council will be hosting a Shrove Tuesday Celebration on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, to mark the beginning of our Lenten Journey. Every student will have the opportunity to enjoy two pancakes and syrup with their friends in their classroom.  In an effort to continue with our school’s ECO initiatives, we are asking students to bring a plastic plate and a fork on this special day.  The St. Luke CSAC Committee will be at school flipping pancakes for our students.

We will have a gluten free option available.  We are asking parents to use their judgement in deciding if the pancakes are safe for their children. We encourage those who cannot eat our pancakes, to bring in a pancake/snack from home to enjoy with their peers at the same time.  If your child will not be participating, please contact your classroom teacher.
